Botanica III — Pistil
Futuropia Cities — Botanica Series
About the work
Every flower has a centre. This one is inhabited.
Pistil is the most botanically precise work in the Botanica series a composition drawn from above, as if from the perspective of a bee approaching the flower that is also a city. Lancet petals radiate outward in a perfect star formation, each one ribbed and resolved with the structural patience of a leaf that has been growing since spring. At the centre, a geodesic dome rises from the convergence point of all the petals its surface a lattice of structural triangles enclosing a living interior, the green of the garden within visible through the mesh, proof that the heart of this building breathes.
In botany, the pistil is the reproductive organ at the centre of the flower the part that receives, that holds, that transforms. Di Nicolantonio names his central dome accordingly: this is the building that receives the city's energy and holds it, that is simultaneously the most protected and the most vital space in the entire Botanica district. A greenhouse at the scale of a cathedral. A garden enclosed within the geometry of a flower that has grown to the size of a neighbourhood.
The aerial perspective unique in the Botanica series, echoing Wingspan in the broader Futuropia Cities collection reveals a formal logic that ground-level drawings cannot show: that the building, seen from above, is not like a flower. It is one. The distinction has ceased to exist.
In the Futuropia universe, Pistil is the great botanical garden of Verdania the lung of the city, the place where the living archive of every plant species that ever existed in the region before the city arrived is preserved, studied, and quietly, insistently, returned to the world.
