Parallax
About the work
She is looking directly at you. She has been, since before you noticed.
In Parallax, Di Nicolantonio makes the compositional choice none of the other Augmented works dare: the full face, front-on, eyes open, gaze unbroken. No fragmentation, no dissolve, no storm of hatch marks to hide behind. Just a woman, present and complete with one eye that is no longer entirely hers.
The left eye is human. Dark, deep, direct. The right eye has been replaced encased within a square mechanical housing mounted flush against the face, its orbital architecture precisely engineered, its iris a calibrated sensor array connected by filaments to processors embedded at the temple. It does not blink on the same rhythm. It does not dream. It computes, classifies, and transmits in real time processing visual data at a bandwidth no biological retina could sustain. Thermal. Infrared. Electromagnetic. The invisible layers of a world the human eye was never built to read.
And yet the gaze is unified. Both eyes hold you with the same unnerving steadiness. The AI eye has learned to look the way humans look or perhaps she has learned to look the way it does. At this stage of integration, the distinction no longer matters.
In optics, parallax is the difference in apparent position of an object seen from two distinct points. Two eyes. Two systems. One field of vision deeper, wider, and more precise than either could produce alone.
This is what augmented sight looks like from the outside. Imagine it from within.
Parallax is the answer to every question The Augmented series has been asking.
